Solder a JST for LiPo directly onto OAK board? [ANSWERED!]
« on: June 10, 2016, 02:05:39 pm »
Howdy. I know Digistump sells a LiPo charging shield, but I am interested in knowing if it is possible to solder a JST plug directly to the board where it looks like you should be able to, and it says 3.7V?

I ask because I don't want to fry my board, if this was a legacy aspect of the OAK and is not really set up to work. I am not sure how I could even test this. I have plenty of LiPo chargers, and JUST want the 3.7V hookup.

Any input from other board members or Digistump would be greatly appreciated. Really digging my boards, just want to get them off the desk and deployed remotely for my little projects without incurring too much more cost ;)

Hi there! :)

The shield is there if you just want the convenience of a plug in shield. You can solder a JST-PH socket where it is marked on the board, and power the oak from a single cell lipo. The regulator on the oak was specially chosen as it would work with a lipo or 5v input whilst still able to provide a stable output, and another user has also gone ahead and used it as discussed here. Hopefully that is enough to get you started!

@PeterF - Thanks so much for the clarification. I did try and search prior to posting, but must not have worded things correctly.

This is exactly what I wanted to know, even the part about 5V(in). Forgot that part, so thank you for thorough reply!!!

No worries ;) I was asking something on a forum the other day about something, and was told that the forum search was my friend, and had been mentioned somewhere else... although I would disagree... it wasn't friendly enough to change my search keywords from 'sound' to 'audio'  :o  ;D
