This shield would use a typical 2mm-pitch 8x8 LED array and two shift registers. It would be controlled by two pins, and the rows would be multiplexed.

The LED array footprint doesn't quite fit on the published shield size. In particular the pads for the legs would touch the edges of the shield. Since the LED array is larger anyway, I see no harm in increasing the shield size a tiny bit to make it fit.

this version uses a single (incorrectly and incompletely wired, for now) MAX7219, which does 8 rows and 8 columns all by itself. I think this shield is a lot more viable with this IC.

Here it is, on top of a real digispark. I'm very happy with it! I need to work on the library code a bit (which will be general purpose MAX72XX code) and talk to Erik about selling the kit or doing it myself.
