Lost and Found Key Fob
« on: June 20, 2014, 03:38:43 pm »
I have tested the concept and I think it works well... I'm just not sure how practical it is...

Using a DigiSpark, I have programmed it to act as a keyboard and type out certain command and text after it is plugged.  I use it to..

  • Open notepad.exe
  • Type out a pre-defined text message
  • Repeat

I type out my contact information in case the person was inclined to return the keys.

- Does anybody think this would work in a practical sense?

- Would you be crazy enough to insert a strange device into your computer?

I know I could just have a tag with all that information on it... but I'm a geek!

Anyway, I built a device for that purpose.

It uses the Micronuleus bootloader, so I can program it like a DigiSpark.  I keep it loaded with a sketch that does was I described previously.

Very cool looking assembly.  I'd find a way to plug it in - even though I shouldn't.

If I find something like that, I'd think of a way to plug and see what happens, maybe use a computer I can afford to reinstall OS on if needed (old laptop...)

Nice work, but I still think, that it will not fulfill the planned purpose.

Only some geeks would use it, most people will be scared.  I had people asking me, if I have no fear about electrical shocks, when using the digispark ;-)

Furthermore:  I try to avoid attaching my contact information to keys, as that might be used to open my door. So I use some service cards, you can get usually from shopping companies, automobile clubs and other. You register with them, and they will be man in the middle for returning the keys.

@gogol: You have a good point.  I think what I will do instead is...

    1) put my *work* email, phone, address and
    2) relegate it to something like a backpack or something else less vulnerable.

I appreciate the feedback!
