Oak TFT Shield Kit Tutorial

Product Description:

oak-tft-shield-1.jpg oak-tft-shield-4.jpg

The Oak TFT Shield Kit allows you to build a shield that adds a 2.2“ color TFT LCD to the Oak. The shield works with the easy to use Adafruit GFX library. Use it to show project status, your favorite Twitter feed, or even turn it into an alarm clock!

This is an unassembled kit and requires basic soldering. This is designed for use with the Digistump Oak development board, which is not included.

Part Quantity Identification
Oak TFT Shield PCB1
TFT Display1
47 ohm 1/4 W resistor 1% or 5%1 Yellow - Violet - Black
1×40 pin male 0.1” pitch header 21 pins worth

Resistor Values: For more information on how to identify the value of the resistors, we recommend these sites: A nice simple resistor calculator: A comprehensive article on identification:

Soldering: If you are new to soldering we recommend the following tutorials: Soldering Basics ( and Soldering Crash Course from the folks at Sparkfun ( How to solder from the Curious Inventor:

Adafruit has this excellent guide that starts with the tools needed and then shows detailed pictures, including some of the common problems that beginners experience (

We assume for these assembly instructions that you know the basics of thru-hole soldering. If you don't check out the links above, these boards are very easy to solder - we promise!

Empty kit bag (or if using a raw PCB, acquire parts) and verify contents.

Solder the leads of the resistor and clip off the excess.

Cut or Snap a length of two male headers 9 pins long and one 3 pins long. Insert into corresponding positions (on the bottom of the board) and solder each pin. Be sure to leave the row of holes on the edge of the board open where there are two sets of 9 holes. This is where the TFT screen is soldered.

Tip: Inserting the headers into a breadboard and then placing the board on top can make this process easier.

Note: If you are using stackable headers, use them here instead of the standard male headers.

The TFT screen should have headers pre-soldered into place. Insert into the open row of holes on the right edge of the shield and solder each pin from the bottom.

Note: For a less permanent solution, use a row of female headers so you can remove the TFT screen as needed.

Your Oak TFT shield is complete!

See Examples→Adafruit_ILI9341→graphicstest - NOTE: This uses a modified version of the Adafruit_ILI9341 library (that is still compatible with other platforms), ensure that the example references the Oak otherwise you have a conflicting library installed.

SD Card:

To use the SD Card slot use wire to connect the corresponding pins on the LCD to the PCB.
