I am thinking about connecting it to an i2c 8x8 led display and running a scrolling text display as a name badge

You could use a shift-register-based LED array as well. I\'m not sure whether you can find those cheaper than i2c or not.

I don\'t know if they have screens that do low res graphics with i2c yet, but that might be an interesting option for a name badge.

Hmmm, the name badge is an interesting thought.
