How about a POV shield with LEDs in a row.
- As many as possible for high res pov displays.
- RGB or single colour LED. More leds with same shield if one colour.
- Perhaps with a daisy chain so more shields could be added.
- Perhaps use a 74HC595 to drive. Efficient design here: http://leyanda.de/light/povglobe.php (http://leyanda.de/light/povglobe.php)

I'd just use some high density pixel strand like https://www.adafruit.com/products/1138 - no need for a shield - it just wires straight on to the digispark :)

That's a pretty good idea but 1m of that is 40 USD.
Also the LEDs are 1.7cm away from each other (8 every 13.6cm. 32 is over half a metre long).
So you'd have to make a large scale POV wand. Not so good for (say) embeddiing in a bike wheel but great for a big hand waving wand or for large scale light writing... ooh thats a good idea...
I still vote for the shield though ;D
