I'm pretty sure I shorted out some of the pins on one of my Digisparks and it no longer does anything. The power LED doesn't come on and the device doesn't appear over USB.
This gives me a shield idea: It'd be really neat if digistump produced a 'rugged' shield, like the rugged arduino guys - adding over voltage and short protection on all of the pins as well as power input and output, resettable fuses, that sort of thing arranged on a board so you can stack another shield on top and use it during experimentation, then when you're done and confident you wont be making any shorts or other mistakes, take the rugged shield out and connect things directly. You could probably just copy the mods the rugged arduino guys did to the original arduino designs pretty much exactly
