Title: Device not found on OSX
Post by: AnalogMP on September 03, 2015, 08:02:11 am
Hi,

First post on here, have tried searching but the returned results don't seem to cover the experience I am having.  This image is the basic system info for the MacBook Pro being used.

New to Digispark, but not new to Arduino, or micro-controller development having cut my teeth on the 804x 805x series from Intel almost 30 years ago - and in machine code ;D . Also have had all the Arduino fun of making sure the correct USB/Serial drivers are installed depending on the chipsets and manufacturer / cloner. :)  Great piece of kit though, and we use them for high end control modules in our effects pedals.

We have a new project which needs a small controller for a guitar, and rather than an Arduino nano, we thought we'd try the Digispark for a change.  Have downloaded the Digispark software for OSX and integrated it into the Arduino IDE and have the "Digiboards AVR Boards" submenu visible.  Have trawled this site (I think) for other tips lik changing IDE, although we dont have the Digispark IDE listed - didn't pursue this too hard as some seem to say it has little efect.

We have gone for the standard Digispark and have copied the source code for blinking LED, just to get it all working first.

However while everything compiles, when asked to plug in the Digispark, the following shows in the IDE:

Running Digispark Uploader...
Plug in device now... (will timeout in 60 seconds)
> Please plug in the device ...
> Press CTRL+C to terminate the program.
> Device search timed out

I have installed the relevant bits and pieces, rebooted my MacBook Pro and tried direct to both USB ports, through a Mobee powered USB hub (is my rechargeable mouse/keyboard base station) and also through an Orico powered USB hub, but always get the same response from the IDE.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?  I have probably missed something but for the life of me I can't see where.

Cheers

Do you have a second digispark?  Have you tried another cable?  Put it on another computer?

The factory installed sketch - on the Pro at least - comes up during the boot process attempting to connect.  I didn't find an original when I looked.

I've had cable troubles to USB on this and others with the cable not being 'right'.  On Windows I can go into Device Manager and see the installed device.  I plugged in a new Pro to my now Win 10 machine and it installed a driver on seeing the device - it was Win7 upgraded and not seen a Pro in months.  Not sure what the tool for you to see that on a mac is.

Just now I then went and followed this http://digistump.com/wiki/digispark/tutorials/connectingpro (http://digistump.com/wiki/digispark/tutorials/connectingpro) and pulled the online JSON into board manager and found and modified the EXAMPLE / Start and it worked!

Thanks for the info, will see if it gets picked up on my old Windows machine.  We only have the one here right now as were just experimenting, so will probably order a couple more and see if they do anything different.  Will report back.

OK I have now tried 3 different DigiSparks from 3 different suppliers and none can be found when I try to upload. :(

All my other arduinos connect no issue (nano, Uno r3, mega etc), really want to get these working as have sooo many things I want to do with something that requires a little board.  Could shoehorn in a nano - but its overkill and really just too big.

Have followed the troubleshooting guide too, several times.

I guess I may have to bite the bullet and get a cheap windows netbook - have been meaning to for a while for some other things I am looking at - and then try that too.

I have a problem with Mac OSX as well.
But my problem is with the
 “Additional Boards Manager URLs”:

The Arduino IDE tells me that it failed to download. Anyway I can manually add support for digispark for OSX? How? Where? I am new to OSX.
Everything worked great on windows side when dual booted to windows on same mac and same digispark board.

@AnalogMP
I had the same issue with some Digisparks and my Macbooks (13" retina, late 2013 and 15" retina, late 2013), what ended up solving it was using a simple USB 2.0 extension cable. The troubleshooting mentions using a USB 2.0 hub, but the extension cable seemed to work just fine for me.

Stupid question, did you guys try a USB extension with the front cut off?   The macbooks don't allow it to be fully plugged into the notebook, so it doesn't make good contact.
