Title: Availability of Digix without header pins & sockets installed?
Post by: SnarkMasta on December 31, 2013, 02:57:59 pm
Hi, a question for the guys at Digistump:
I am planning on making a shield for the Digix and want to have the shield mounted to the underside of the Digix so i have access to the SD Card and keep the profile of the assembled unit as low as possible. I could try and remove the headers myself but my past experience with multiple through hole component de-soldering has damaged the hole plating.

But i digress, the question; Are you planning on selling a headerless variant when the Digix goes retail?
Cheers?

No headerless model will be available for the forseeable future - it is too expensive to make both in these quantities

A trick I have used before with connectors such as these.  Use a hot air gun to heat the connector shell to "soften" it a little and pull it off the pins. Then one by one unsolder the pins.  To remove solder from the holes, heat the solder and tap the board, momentum will carry the solder out.
