Source files?
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:57:30 am »
I love this Digistump and have backed the Kickstarter project.
However I can't find any source files on this project. Can someone give me a pointer?
I want to start designing my own shields for it.

The source files will be published shortly after the kickstarter rewards are shipped.

Gah! So black and white, no room for speculation.
I also am looking forward to some docs. Suppose there is nothing to do but wait.

I\'m confused as to why you won\'t release any documents until after the rewards have shipped. This seems like a total loss of feedback opportunities of the crowd that you\'ve just enrolled in supporting your project. Docs would also allow people to be ready with a plethora of great stuff the day they get their DigiSpark, not weeks after.

I hope you\'ll consider releasing them sooner.

@donnyM, who are you talking to? I don\'t think Erik has made any announcements regarding documentation. Besides, there is plenty of information about Arduino and the ATTiny85 processor on the net.

@donnyM - we will be releasing docs before shipment, as soon as we finish typing up the tutorials and all that. Right now our energy is focused on production, we\'ll start finishing up docs and tutorials in a week or so and put them up on a wiki.
Schematics, source code, etc will be released at shipment - this ensures our backers get their Digisparks before anyone else.

I think this \"wait until shipment\" policy makes the Kickstarter project stating DigiSpark as an Open Source Hardware project a bit deceptive. OSH is not OSH _until_ the documents are released. I had a bit of concern when I pledged. I understand the hurry to ship the product, but most people pledged for DigiSpark did so as an OSH project, and Digistump has an obligation to follow the OSH rules.

@theLEDartist - We feel we are following both the spirit and letter of an open source project, we apologize if you feel we deceived you in any way - but any time it was asked when the source files would be available we responded \"by the time the Digisparks ship\" - we believe this follows the example of many successful open source hardware makers who also have a business to run. SparkFun, Adafruit, and Arduino themselves don\'t generally make source available before the product is out - and in fact the Arduino folks strongly cautioned against it as their sales for the Leonardo were strongly effected by clones being available first. At the end of the day if our open source hardware is not profitable (or breaks even as the case often is) and if we can\'t pay the designers, developers, and producers then we can\'t continue to make open source designs and sponsor the community. We will always try our best to find the balance between ensuring we can continue our projects and that we honor the open source format that we have chosen.
