Digispark pinheader/connector install orientation
« on: November 21, 2016, 08:21:45 am »
When searching for the best way to install/orientation of pinheaders/connectors there seem to be a gazillion possibilities:

1. male or female connectors, or a mix and if so which ones where?
2. upside mounted or downside mounted, or a mix and if so which ones where?

And if choosen, what is the rationale for the choice (pcb mounting, breadboard mounting, other,..)?

Thks for your inputs,

Erik

I have used female sockets on the top of mine as I intended to only use them with shields (just like Arduino does it). However, I also appreciate the fact that you can put male headers on the bottom, and only the GND and 5v pins, and it is then breadboard ready. You could also put stackable headers on if you wanted, so you could have the sockets on top, and pins underneath. It really depends on your intended use! :)

Hi Peter, thks for your reply; I see very few examples when searching the net, and the response here is minimal. I tend to put males for I/O downside and supply pins upward so it is possible to stack into a ready-made project-specific pcb while also being able to insert it for protyping in a breadboard. Disadvantage is the amount of space used by the upward pins; maybe I should use angle pins there?

Angled pins would be good, especially if they are angled over the Digispark to minimise space usage. Otherwise, have a look at the two ways I have used mine.... https://flic.kr/s/aHskPVvEYt

Good to see these pictures; I had not realised putting all pins downward would not have to conflict with a breadbord setup (I had not thought about putting the power supply pins directly in the breadbord power lines  :-[

The catch is you can't put the VIN pin down... that is blocked by the breadboard itself... but that isn't a problem for most setups.
