Still can't update OAKs for the first time
« on: May 03, 2016, 05:41:03 pm »
I tried the method described at http://digistump.com/wiki/oak/tutorials/local_update#temporary_router_settings_changes using the Local Update Tool method. I used my new Acer tablet to be the second wi-fi device to connect to the Oak board. The download seemed to be going well, but on the main PC, in the DOS window, I got the following messages;

New connection from: 192.168.2.46
Starting firmware transfer to 192.168.2.46
Finishing firmware transfer to 192.168.2.46 (1 transfer done)
Connection lost to:192.168.2.46
Firmware request finished for 192.168.2.46 <Reason: Failure instance: Traceback ,failure with no frames>: class 'twisted.internet.error.ConnectionDone'>:Connection was closed cleanly.

The OAK is now blinking three times on, pause, three times on, pause, and so on. I logged into the Particle cloud and it says "Bummer, you don't own any devices". I'm beginning to think that I will never get these boards working.

Hi Scott,

Sounds like your Oak has finished the update, and is doing the blink pattern shown here? If so, the end is in sight! It sounds like your oak updated, but failed to claim on Particle. You can do that manually via the manual claim instructions, and you should be able to get started with programming them then!

After much effort, I now have 9 of my 10 OAKS up and running. I had to manually add most of them to the Particle cloud. The 10th one is the one I hooked up to do a factory reset with an FTDI board. I'm not sure if I can recover that one, but I will try. I came to realize that despite what the DOS screen was telling me about disconnections and so on, as long as I was seeing the sets of three blinks, I had successfully downloaded the firmware. After that, I simply had to run the manual program, usually three or four times to get them onto the cloud. During the manual claim process, I also had to cycle the power on the boards, sometimes 2 or 3 times.

The disconnection messages are normal. If the local server method still gives the reason for the disconnect (I haven't run the latest version of it), all you are looking for is that it was a clean termination, or a corruption/unexpected/etc. I don't see any reason that #10 won't also be recoverable, as long as it doesn't have any hardware faults. Have a look at the first update via serial wiki instructions, and hopefully it will co-operate!

Hi Peter,

I have my Oak in the same state as you described in post #2. After several attempts to connect the Oak for the first time I was able to do it with a Linux machine. The update was done and now I have three blinks pattern.

When I connect to it via 192.168.0.1/particle it tells me is connected. The same I get a device ID using 192.168.0.1/device-id but when I try to add manually to Particle build and claim it it tells me there is no device to claim.

Any other hints? Thanks...

Hm... not too sure what's going on there. Stupid question first: Is your Oak listed on https://dashboard.particle.io/user/devices at all? Meaning that it has finished the claim, and is now just waiting for it's first program? If not, hopefully Erik can shed some light on the matter.

Hi Peter,

I did not checked the first time if Oak was showing inside https://dashboard.particle.io/user/devices.

I tried later again to test it but I was not able to see anymore at 192.168.0.1/particle and 192.168.0.1/device-id. Very strange...

You may need to put the Oak into safe / config mode if you have since told it to connect to your wifi to access the 192.168.0.1 pages. To do this, you connect P1 to GND and power up the oak, (and then remove the P! / GND connection after 2-3 seconds) it will go into config mode, and you should then be able to connect to it again. However, you can check  https://dashboard.particle.io/user/devices anytime to see if there is an entry - it will be listed regardless of if the Oak is online or offline. If it is online, it will have a 'breathing' blue icon next it.
