Failure to enter config menu
« on: May 10, 2016, 12:48:17 pm »
So I am having a bit of trouble connecting to my Oaks for the first time.

I can start the config webpage, log into particle, and connect to the acorn wireless network.  But after that it only gives me the error saying it was unable to connect to the Oak.  I feel like this is something very simple I am missing but cannot find it myself.  I have tried on different phones and laptops but all give the same message.  except my main laptop which refuses to connect to the acorn wireless network at all.

Thanks for any help!

I'm not sure exactly what could be causing your problem. First thing I would be checking is the USB cable and/or power supply being used to power the Oak - is a decent 500ma (1A would be better) USB-type power source? Maybe the cable is a bit wimpy, and isn't supplying the power the Oak needs all the time (thin wires = voltage drop = bad).

Only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is to make sure you are connecting to the ACORN-XXXXXX network - I have seen mentions before of another SSID being listed sometimes - if so, don't use it. You may find your phone is the most reliable when it does start working - laptops/desktops seem to be a bit of a pain during the first update phase...

Ok, so sounds like the simple stuff isn't the issue!  ;D

I'd try again, and after connecting to the Oaks Acorn wifi network on your device, wait for about 5-10 seconds before letting the config app/page continue (i.e. clicking on next at the prompt to connect to your device), as I noticed with some of mine it struggles a bit to do the initial wifi handshake, so I gave it a few seconds to do its thing and settle down.

Other than that, unless someone else has any ideas, you might want to consider the serial update method to get this first update one, and you may also have to do a manual claim to get it on Particle.

Well this is not going as planned.  Gave it some more time after WiFi connected, powered it directly with a battery, but same error.   I am not supposed to have any jumpers in the board am I?

I went to the device id page that the manual claim link said and I was able to load that page so I know I am getting something across the WiFi connection.  I tried the serial connection through and Arduino once but it didn't work the first time (potentially because I was slightly sleepy in the wee hours of the morning.)  but will give it another go.

No, No jumpers.

If something really peculiar is going on, you might be able to enter safe/config mode, by having P1 connected to ground when powering the oak up (only needs to be jumpered for 2-3 seconds, then you can remove the jumper, else you won't see the LED blinking).

For the serial connection, you may need to double check RX is connected to TX, TX to RX, and you have a good GND to GND connection. Oak still needs power, so have that plugged into the power supply still.
