Is a SD Card Required to Boot the DigiX?

Is a SD card, blank or populated, required for the DigiX to boot and connect via USB?

I removed the 32GB one I had installed, was full of junk docs and pictures, then rebooted the DigiX. It didn't come online.

I thought pressing the ERASE button and rebooting would fix it... uh no pretty sure that made things worse for me.

Would appreciate any help.

I have never put an sd card in my Digix and it works fine, so an sd card is not required.

What do you mean that pressing erase made it worse?

If the COM port isn't showing in the Arduino IDE - unplug and replug the board. If that doesn't work - while plugged in, hold down the erase button on the board for a moment and then unplug and replug - you may then have to select it from the com port menu as it may be on a different port - but it is a sure way to get it to respond even if your sketch crashed the USB stack.

By making it worse I mean that both the green LED's just stay lit, before one was solid and the other blinking.

As far as the erase. I've followed the procedure outlined in the wiki and that you just posted in the reply.

I can not get it to respond after pressing the erase and uplung/plugging it in.

After erasing there is no blink at all, because there is no program  loaded.  That one green led is burning constant is ok, as that indicates power! 
Everything is fine!
The DigiX has now another serial port, as it is now running in SAM-BA mode instead of the Arduino/Digistump mode . If you don't see any COM-port you may not have the SAMBA-driver installed.

I read that and understand it's in a different mode. However, there are no other devices showing up at all in the windows device manager. It should be showing up some form when I plug it in.

I've contacted support about a replacement.

check different cables and perhaps a different computer.  I can't believe, that erase & reset kills the board.  There are several threads, talking about issues with not detecting the board.
