5V Buck regulator power capability?

The buck regulator on the digix is an AOZ1021, which is capable of 3A of continuous supply current.

All of the documentation only points out 5V at 1A when connected to a 5V power supply.

What about when connected to a 6-16V power supply?

Is the full rated 3A of the buck regulator available, or does the design of the digix limit the actual capability of this regulator?

The documentation states
1A at 5V
and 1A at 3.3V
(and this is regardless of input over 5V)

If you are feeding the VIN pin 6V or more then you can pull up to 2A at 5V and 1A at 3.3V - even more at 5V perhaps if you aren't using too much of the 3.3V (wifi and the MCU are using it though). I upgraded this chip at the last minute but left it out of the documentation to prevent someone from trying to pull 3A at 5V with a 16V input in their attic and no extra cooling and then asking for a refund when it breaks. So consider 1A at 5V what is was designed for, and over that watch for too much heat or heat sink the AOZ and inductor - but the components are certainly rated for it.
