Digix Power supply specs
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:43:18 pm »
I just received my Digix board. What kind of power supply do I need? (voltage, amperage, etc.) Is the power connection positive in the center, and negative on the outside or vice-versa?

Thanks.

6-12v about 250ma minimum + whatever you need for anything you have attached - center positive

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I'd like to clarify before I plug the below into my DigiX. I think the specs look right on this plug, but I'm a newbie to electronics like this. The only warning I saw was that it's at the upper end of voltage (12V). I also don't know the max amps the DigiX can take. I'm planning to order a 9V but would like to test if plugging this in fixes some of my wifi freezes that I suspect may be from power draw.

Thanks.

I like to use 7.5V walwarts you can get cheap on Amazon or EBAY.  For any of the Arduino stuff with linear regulators, they keep the power dissipation low. I also paint the tips of my walwarts. Blue=5.0V, gold=7.5V, yel=9.0V, red=12.0V many things don't like the wrong voltages.  If my daughters only knew where there nail polish is going.

@kygix - this will work fine - import things are that it is center positive (the diagram shows that) and under 16v - 12v is just fine and will work great.

The DigiX has a buck switching power supply to take VIN down to 5V so it can take anything 6v-15v just fine with no major heat increase with higher voltages.

@dfarrell - I really need to paint the ends on my wall warts - I charged a 5v tablet with 12v the other day, brand new, luckily it just shut itself off and still works - thanks for the idea!

As digistump stated, 12 volts )less than 16) and center positive are what's important.
The DigiX and any attached hardware will draw however many milliamps it needs.
The 1000 mA rating on the power supply is just the maximum *it* can put out; it will not "force" any current.

Thanks all for the information! I've tested and it works well.
