Expanding the DigiKeyboard library

Hello guys. So I need some help. I would like to try and expand the DigiKeyboard Library to include things like Num and Caps Lock statuses but have no idea where to start. I tried using the guide here http://codeandlife.com/2012/06/18/usb-hid-keyboard-with-v-usb/ but it all started going over my head when I tried adapting the code already present in the library. I would love to learn this stuff but will need someones help by shoving me in the right direction.
