Digispark not recognized by Windows 7
« on: April 02, 2013, 05:18:49 am »

Short version:
indows 7 isn't recognizing the Digispark when it's plugged in even though the lights come on.

Longer version:

I received my Digispark and after downloading and installing the driver and IDE, I fired up the upload on a simple program. After the the prompt, I plugged in the Digispark, and it timed out.

I read through the forums and tried USB ports on the front, back, and with cables. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers (in multiple ways as described in the forums) with no luck.

Windows (7) doesn't even seem to see the device when it's plugged in--even though it lights up and after a few seconds starts blinking once a second.

The guy that convinced me to start on Arduino later told me that I shouldn't have to spend hours troubleshooting.

I emailed support, and they asked some questions:

Have you tried with a hub? Not a powered one. I don't have one.

Can you try with non-essential USB devices unplugged? Tried it. I only had the keyboard and mouse plugged in otherwise.

Do you have a second machine to try? Not unless it works on an Android tablet.

When you plug it in do you hear the connect and then disconnect sound? No, and the Device Manager does not refresh when the Digispark is plugged in and unplugged like it does with all other external devices.

Can you try wiggling it int he socket and see if it makes the connect sound? Tried it, no luck. It's pretty tight, the only way to wiggle it is to pull it out a little, but believe me when I say I've tried it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for posting here, it's a big help to have others be able to reference solutions.

You mentioned not having a powered hub - have you tried a non-powered hub?

If you have, then if you don't mind sending it back to us - we'll go ahead and get you a replacement (I'll test it before it goes out so it's a known good one). Send us an email support at digistump dot com with your address and we'll send one out today and give you our address to ship the bad one back to.

Thanks,
Erik

I did try with an extender cable, but I don't have a  usb hub of any kind because my previous non-powered hub didn't provide enough power to my devices. The onboard usb ports did provide enough power to start up the Digispark, but it wasn't recognized.

Is it worth buying one to try it? I would think that a usb hub would only reduce the input power.

It isn't an issue of input power - with no shields or circuits attached the Digispark uses under 30ma (USB ports provide 100 minimum). Sometimes a hub helps because its control circuitry is more tolerant of the in-exact nature of the Digispark electronics. It has helped for many many folks here and certainly is worth a try if it isn't too much trouble, they also can be a handy layer of protection for your computer when working with USB electronics like the Digispark and Arduino.

Ok. I got my hands on a non-powered usb hub. On the plus side, windows responded to it for the first time! Unfortunately, it shows up as an unknown device and the properties status says: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I'll search the forums for a code 43. This is progress.

The only other mention of a Code 43 was from this post, and he fixed it by removing his pin solder. I have not soldered this Digispark, I wanted to get a blinky light first :)

I have an Imac but use Win7 on it :)

Could not get it recognized at first. I am using a powered usb hub.

Then used a usb extender cable and plugged it in without using the usb hub.
And then it worked!

When uploading a sketch have to unplug it before uploading. Will rtfm.

cheers,
Gus
